On the Montemauro hill, at over 700 metres, the sanctuary of Saint Michael born of a popular devotion in 1929.
We climb up to the Montemauro district, at about 716 metres, where the sanctuary dedicated to Saint Michael the Archangel stands. Its story begins in 1929, when a local farmer said he had seen the Archangel, who asked him for a chapel on the hilltop. The villagers then enlarged the building, carrying the stones by hand from the valleys below, and the small original chapel can still be seen beside the larger church.We really love the stone Holy Stairs next to the old chapel, recently restored: by tradition you climb them three times, saying a prayer on each step, and they keep a small stone cross found in 1929. We suggest coming for the feasts of 8 May and 29 September, when pilgrims arrive from neighbouring villages too and the statue of the saint is carried in procession.
