Atena Lucana's mother church built over the Roman forum, documented from 967 and rebuilt in the 18th century with canvases by Nicola Peccheneda.

The Church of Santa Maria Maggiore stands over the area of the Roman forum of ancient Atina: in 1880 a floor was found here with an inscription recalling two Roman magistrates. It is already documented in 967 and was rebuilt in the 18th century: Carlo Peccheneda oversaw the structure, while his son Nicola, a painter from Polla, decorated it. The bell tower, of 14th-century origin, bears the date 1752 on its portal. The single-nave interior, with a semicircular apse and five altars on each side, has a coffered stucco ceiling made after the 1857 earthquake. We like the canvases of the Apostles painted by Peccheneda in 1751, the wooden bust of St Blaise and the polychrome marble high altar. We suggest not missing the 18th-century wooden choir.
