Parish church of San Pietro al Tanagro, rebuilt between 1815 and 1824 after the French destroyed the town in 1806.

San Pietro al Tanagro lies on the north-western side of the Vallo di Diano, at about 460 metres. Its parish church is dedicated to St Peter the Apostle, who gives the town its name, and is linked to a dramatic moment in local history: in 1806 French troops destroyed the town. The previous church was small and inadequate for the population, so it was rebuilt from the foundations between 1815 and 1824. We like reading it as a symbol of the town's rebirth. We suggest rounding off the visit by climbing Monte Crocifisso, where a chapel of 1899 stands, for an overall view of the Vallo plain.
