Church of Santa Maria ad Nives in Castel Campagnano

  • Visit: about 20 min

By the lower gate of Castel Campagnano, the Church of Santa Maria ad Nives of 1326, renovated in Baroque style in 1753.

Near the lower gate of the village of Castel Campagnano stands the Church of Santa Maria ad Nives, built in 1326 and completely restored in 1753, as the date on the portal frame records. We like the neoclassical façade with its double flight of steps, Ionic and Corinthian pilasters and pediment, next to the square-based bell tower. The Baroque interior, on a Latin-cross plan with a single nave, has three chapels on each side with interconnecting small domes and a barrel vault decorated with stucco. We recommend admiring the four 18th-century Neapolitan-school altarpieces, including the Madonna della Neve, the marble high altar and the frescoed coffered dome.
