Church of San Michele Arcangelo in Castel Campagnano

  • Visit: about 20 min

In Castel Campagnano, a rock-cut church carved into the tuff, mentioned in 979, with 10th–11th-century frescoes.

Castel Campagnano preserves a rare rock-cut church dedicated to St Michael the Archangel, carved into a bed of tuff and probably already mentioned in a bull of 979. Abandoned in the 16th century, when the building that later became the ducal castle rose on the hill, it was connected to the palace courtyard by a staircase cut in the tuff and used as a cellar. Now deconsecrated, it preserves part of the narthex with three pointed arches and the apse. We like the fragments of 10th- and 11th-century frescoes, with the Virgin and Child, Christ among angels and Saints Nicholas and Michael. We recommend noticing their similarities with the rock churches of Apulia, unusual in Campania.
