Church of San Leone Magno in Ruviano

  • Visit: about 20 min

Church in the historic centre of Ruviano, built with reused Roman-era materials and dedicated to St Leo.

Strolling through the historic centre of Ruviano, we suggest stopping in front of the Church of San Leone Magno. What makes it special is that it was built reusing spolia from the Roman era: ancient stones and fragments that tell how history has built up in layers in this corner of the Volturno valley, with the classical past reused to build places of worship in later centuries. We like examining the masonry closely in search of these reused elements, a little game that makes the visit more intriguing for younger visitors too. St Leo is the town's patron saint and is celebrated on the first Sunday of May and on 10 November: we suggest taking advantage of these dates to discover Ruviano at its liveliest, combining the visit to the church with a stroll through the lanes.
