Church of Sant'Agostino in Sessa Aurunca

  • Visit: about 20 min

In Sessa Aurunca, the 15th-century Church of Sant'Agostino, in Baroque dress, holds the tomb of the humanist Agostino Nifo.

On Corso Lucilio, in Sessa Aurunca, the Church of Sant'Agostino dates back to the 15th century: the cultural heritage catalogue dates it to 1433. Over time the building took on Baroque forms, while its rectangular hall layout echoes that of the nearby Church of the Immacolata, built in the same years. We like knowing that Agostino Nifo, the philosopher and humanist born in Sessa and a leading figure of Renaissance culture, rests here. Next to the church is the former convent, whose forms have been compared to Vanvitelli's style. We suggest spending a few minutes at the humanist's tomb, a simple way to encounter the town's intellectual history.
