Church of San Vitaliano in Sparanise

  • Visit: about 20 min

Small church in Sparanise beside an old watermill, probably built with materials from a pagan temple.

The small church of San Vitaliano stands in Sparanise near a medieval watermill, once powered by the local streams. It is one of the most evocative places for getting to know the town's ancient roots. We are intrigued by its link with the pagan past: 18th-century writings record the remains of a temple beside the church, and the building is thought to have been built reusing those materials, as was common in the past. According to one theory, it was a temple dedicated to Hesperus that gave Sparanise its name.
