Francolise Castle

Irregularly shaped medieval castle overlooking Francolise, linked to the Swabians, the Angevins and a visit by Charles of Bourbon.
Francolise Castle dominates the village from above with its irregular plan, typical of medieval fortifications adapted to the terrain. Its history spans several eras: in the Swabian period it hosted barons loyal to King Manfred, while under the Angevins it became the fief of Simon de Montfort, Count of Avellino.In the 17th century its walls sheltered a brigand and his men, and later it received a visit from King Charles of Bourbon and his consort. We like climbing up here for the view over the surrounding plain: we recommend combining the castle with the archaeological area of the Roman villa of San Rocco, in the same municipality.
