Roman theatre of ancient Cales, built in the 2nd century BC and renovated under Augustus, at the centre of a large archaeological area.

In the territory of Calvi Risorta, ancient Cales preserves one of its most evocative monuments, the Roman theatre. The first building probably dates from the 2nd century BC, while under Augustus it was thoroughly renovated, with an enlarged proscenium and a monumental pool behind it. The cavea rests on arched galleries in opus reticulatum.Around the theatre extends the archaeological area, with the amphitheatre, the central baths with stucco work still visible, the northern baths along the cardo, a temple on a podium, the castellum aquae and the walls with six gates. We like the so-called Ponte delle Monache, a passage cut into the tuff. We recommend comfortable shoes to explore the site at leisure.
