Church of Santa Maria a Castello

In Francolise, the early 14th-century Church of Santa Maria a Castello, with a Romanesque rose window, a Gothic bell tower and the Madonna del Cardellino.
Outside the old walls of Francolise, at the beginning of the 14th century a larger church was built, dedicated to Santa Maria della Carità e delle Grazie; from the 16th century it took the name of Santa Maria a Castello. It was a place of worship and of care for soldiers and inhabitants.We like the façade with its portal, the Romanesque rose window and the Gothic bell tower. Inside, we recommend looking for the 18th-century altar and above all the Madonna del Cardellino (Madonna of the Goldfinch), attributed to the school of Giotto. A perfect stop when visiting the village and its castle.
