Church of San Matteo or Santa Maria del Rifugio, known as the Addolorata

  • Visit: about 20 min

On Corso Lucilio in Sessa Aurunca, the Church of San Matteo or del Rifugio, linked to care for prisoners and to Holy Week.

Along Corso Lucilio, opposite the Neo-Gothic Sedile di San Matteo, stands the church known as San Matteo or Santa Maria del Rifugio, also called the Addolorata. The cultural heritage catalogue dates its origins to the 12th century; in the 18th century it became the seat of a brotherhood devoted above all to caring for prisoners, so much so that it is also called the Prisoners' Church.Inside, the image of the Virgin of Refuge is venerated. We like visiting during Holy Week, when one of the processions that bring the town to life sets off from here and the Pietà group parades past, with the Christ carved from a single olive trunk. We suggest experiencing these rites discreetly, letting their ancient charm guide you.
