Church · Castelcivita (SA)

A church in Castelcivita dedicated to Saint Conus, leading down to a pre-Romanesque undercroft of the 8th–9th century.
In the heart of Castelcivita, the Church of San Cono holds one of the oldest witnesses of the village. From the building you go down into a pre-Romanesque undercroft, an underground space that scholars date to between the 8th and 9th centuries. We like to think of this visit as a little journey back in time, well beyond the church's present appearance and parish role.According to local tradition, the area may be linked to even more remote origins: it has been suggested that between the 5th and 6th centuries the Bishop of Paestum, who had taken refuge inland, had his seat here. We recommend combining the stop with a stroll through the lanes of the historic centre, rich in churches and ancient remains, and perhaps with the nearby Castelcivita Caves.
