17th-century chapel in Aquara dedicated to St Roch, the pilgrim saint invoked against plague.

In Aquara, a hill village in the Cilento hinterland, the Chapel of San Rocco dates from the 17th century. It is one of the small sacred buildings that tell of the village's popular religion, bound up with protector saints much loved in rural communities.St Roch, pilgrim and miracle-worker, was invoked against plague and epidemics, which is why devotion to him spread throughout southern Italy. We suggest looking for the chapel during a stroll through the centre, letting the lanes and valley views guide you: we like discovering Aquara just like this, without hurrying.
