In the restored Borgo Castello of Calitri, a museum telling the story of ceramics in the upper Ofanto valley from antiquity to today.

Opened in 2008, Calitri's Ceramics Museum occupies the restored spaces of the Borgo Castello, between Via Castello, Via Madonna delle Grazie and the Ripe. We love that the museum is not shut away in a single building but spread among the alleys of the village's oldest quarter. Its theme is the ceramic production of Calitri and the upper Ofanto valley. The route starts with the trench-tomb culture of Oliveto-Cairano and continues with Roman finds, medieval "mezza maiolica" and Renaissance maiolica, up to modern and contemporary art. We also recommend the sections on architectural terracottas, on now-disused industrial ceramics and on local material culture. The collection keeps growing thanks to excavations, restorations and donations.
