Calitri's oldest quarter, built on the remains of the medieval castle and now restored, with the ceramics museum.

At the top of Calitri's hill, at about 651 metres, lies the Borgo Castello. By the mid-13th century there was already a castle here, strengthened as part of Frederick II's defensive programme; from 1304 the fief belonged to the Gesualdo family for three centuries, then to the Ludovisi and the Mirelli. After the earthquake of 1694 the fortress was abandoned and a farming village grew up on its remains. In 1861 the brigand Carmine Crocco occupied the area with his men. The 1980 earthquake forced the inhabitants to leave and the village fell into decline for years, until restoration work, begun in the early 1990s and resumed in 2005, partly brought it back. Today we suggest exploring it through exhibitions, events and guided tours, with an olive press, a lapidarium and the ceramics collections.
