Calitri's Borgo Castello: the district born on the ruins of the Castrum Calitri, now being restored and home to the Ceramics Museum.

Of the Castrum Calitri, recorded in the 13th century, no intact building survives, but rather an entire district: the Borgo Castello. The castle, which the Gesualdo family turned into a rich lordly residence, was destroyed by the earthquake of 1694; in the following centuries walls, arches and doorways were reused to build houses and lanes, layered over the remains of the Norman fortress. After the 20th-century earthquakes and the ground instability that followed 1980, the area was abandoned by its inhabitants; it is now owned by the municipality and at the centre of a restoration project. We suggest visiting the Ceramics Museum, set up since 2008 in some of the restored rooms of the village, with pieces from the workshops of Calitri and the upper Ofanto valley from the 18th to the 20th century.
