Casalduni Castle

  • Visit: about 1 h 15 min
  • 305 m

Restored by the municipality, Casalduni Castle stands near the Royal Drove Road and the Via Francigena and houses the library.

Casalduni Castle was built to defend the village, which grew up on the slopes of Monte Cicco, in a strategic position close to the Regio Tratturo (Royal Drove Road) and the Via Francigena. Documented from 1309 but perhaps older, it passed from the Caracciolo to the Carafa family and in 1538 to the Sartiano, who held it until the 19th century. It survived the 1688 earthquake almost unscathed.Acquired by the municipality in 1988 and restored, it reopened to the public in 1997 and today partly houses the municipal library and cultural events. We like the large cistern in front of the entrance, the cylindrical corner tower and the little Church of San Rocco connected to the fortress. We recommend venturing as far as the nearby waterfall on the River Alenta.
