Benedictine Abbey of the Santissimo Salvatore

Old Norman-era Benedictine abbey with a three-aisled Romanesque church and medieval frescoes, now home to the Telesia antiquarium.
In San Salvatore Telesino stands the Benedictine abbey of the Santissimo Salvatore, first documented in 1075 and probably founded in the Norman period. It was an important centre of learning: Abbot Alexander of Telese, biographer of Roger II, lived here, and St Anselm was a guest. After its decline and the 1688 earthquake, in 1806 the complex was sold and even used as a mill.Today we can admire the Romanesque basilica-plan church, with a nave and two aisles, a dome, a transept and three apses, which holds 12th- and 13th-century frescoes restored in 2007. Bought by the municipality and restored, since 2010 it has housed the Telesia antiquarium, with finds from the ancient Roman town. We recommend combining the visit with the Telesia excavations.
