Roman bridge over the Titerno at Massa di Faicchio, built on Samnite foundations and linked to the memory of Quintus Fabius Maximus.

In the hamlet of Massa, in Faicchio, the Fabio Massimo bridge spans the Titerno in a gorge between Monte Acero and Monte Gioia. The present structure is largely from the Roman Republican period and rests on an older Samnite structure. Tradition has it that the dictator Quintus Fabius Maximus passed this way, determined to stop Hannibal during the Second Punic War.We like reading the different eras in its masonry: the brick arches rest on remains of Samnite polygonal masonry, while higher up sections of opus reticulatum appear. The bridge was altered after the 1688 earthquake and after the 1860 flood, when a supporting vault was added. In 2008 it was restored, with a rendering that sparked debate.
