In Telese Terme, along Via Roma, lie the ruins of the old cathedral of the Telese diocese, dedicated to the Holy Cross. Its origins are early medieval and a document of 1068 records its recent rebuilding around the year 1000. The 1349 earthquake, which depopulated Telesia and formed Lake Telese, badly damaged it, and the bishops later moved to Cerreto Sannita.It was a Romanesque church with a nave and two aisles on stone columns, perhaps taken from Roman temples, and a bishop's throne adorned with lions and an eagle. Next to it stood a late Lombard bell tower built with reused materials. The 1688 earthquake razed what remained; excavations begun in 1992 have brought the ruins to light, in an area that now looks neglected.
