On the Civita plateau stand the domus, amphitheatre, baths and necropolis of ancient Abellinum.

On the tuff plateau of the Civita, overlooking Atripalda from the north-west, stood ancient Abellinum, a Samnite town that became a Roman colony under Sulla in 82 BC. Earthquakes, eruptions and invasions drove it into decline, and its inhabitants eventually moved to where Avellino stands today.Excavations have uncovered a necropolis, the amphitheatre, the baths and the streets, but the jewel is the Roman domus. The archaeological park, reopened in 2017 after a period of closure, also hosts an evocative Way of the Cross: we recommend a guided tour to find your way among the ruins.
