Ancient Abellinum, the Roman town on the Civita hill in Atripalda.

Abellinum was the Roman town that gave Avellino its name, but it stood on the Civita hill, in Atripalda. It was an important centre of ancient Irpinia, with walls, baths and a large domus. In the archaeological area you can see the remains of the town and its walls. In the Middle Ages the inhabitants moved away, and today's Avellino was born.
