Abellinum in Atripalda
L'antica Abellinum, la città romana sulla collina della Civita di Atripalda.
Church · Atripalda (AV)

Atripalda's mother church, collegiate since 1598, leading to the Specus Martyrum, an ancient cave-catacomb of the martyrs.
The church of Sant'Ippolisto is Atripalda's mother church: a building of early Christian origin, recorded from 1174 and raised to a collegiate church in 1598. Its present appearance is 19th-century, the result of the 1852 restoration. Behind the Baroque altar we suggest looking at the Martyrdom of Sant'Ippolisto painted by Nicola Volpe, and in the chapel of the Blessed Sacrament a fine tabernacle. We are especially fascinated by the Specus Martyrum, reached from the church: a cave that began as a catacomb, where the remains of San Sabino were moved in 1612. It preserves frescoes that are sadly hard to read and the early 18th-century Treasury Chapel, with the martyrs' relics in small urns. From the church you can also reach an ancient open-air early Christian cemetery.
