The luxurious villa at Herculaneum where the only ancient library to survive to our day was found.

The Villa of the Papyri lies outside ancient Herculaneum and is attributed to the family of Lucius Calpurnius Piso, father-in-law of Julius Caesar. In the 18th century it was explored through underground tunnels.Hundreds of carbonised papyrus scrolls were found here, which scholars are still trying to read today, together with many bronze statues now in the MANN. The villa can only be visited on special occasions.
