Medieval Aqueduct of Salerno
L'acquedotto longobardo con gli archi ogivali, chiamato «ponti del diavolo».
Tower · Salerno (SA)

Old tower in the historic centre, where the Lombard walls met the Roman ones, with two large arches on Via dei Canapari.
The name of this tower comes from the cetrangolo, the bitter orange, which was probably once grown in the area. We don't know much about its history, but its position is significant: according to studies it stands exactly where the new Lombard walls crossed the ancient Roman ones, in the area called Orto Magno. We love uncovering these fragments of history among the alleys of Salerno's old town.Over the centuries the tower has been heavily altered and today it is only partly visible: a massive projecting block with two imposing arches facing Via dei Canapari. Not all scholars agree that it really was a defensive tower, although its shape suggests so. We recommend looking for it during a walk through the historic centre.
