Small sanctuary in Fontegreca founded by monks in the 8th century and rebuilt in the 17th, at the gateway to the famous cypress wood.

The Sanctuary of the Madonna dei Cipressi has very ancient origins: according to local tradition, a group of monks built a chapel towards the end of the 8th century near the Grotta della Madonna, a rugged spot where a shepherd is said to have found an image of the Virgin. The little church was rebuilt in the 17th century and still preserves fine majolica.Behind the sanctuary, we like looking for traces of the monks' old cells. We recommend setting off from here on the path that follows the course of the Sava and crosses the Fontegreca cypress wood, a surprising natural woodland within the Matese Park.
