On Piazza Vanvitelli in Caserta, the counts' Palazzo Vecchio was the royal residence of Charles of Bourbon before the Royal Palace.

On Piazza Vanvitelli, the old Piazza della Baronia, stands Caserta's Palazzo Vecchio, so called to distinguish it from the Royal Palace, the new palace. From the 15th century it was the main residence of the Counts of Caserta; between 1569 and the end of the century the Acquaviva family enlarged it, giving it its three-storey form. We love its square medieval tower, still recognisable. In 1750 Charles of Bourbon bought the fief and the palazzo became a royal residence until the Royal Palace was completed. Today it houses the Prefecture and the police headquarters, and its state rooms are furnished with works from the Royal Palace. We recommend looking at it during a stroll around the centre, imagining the years when the court lived here.
