The vertical village of the Amalfi Coast, frequented since prehistory and wrapped in legends about the origin of its name.

The historic centre of Positano has very ancient roots: traces in the La Porta and Matera caves show that people frequented this part of the coast as early as the end of the Palaeolithic. The name, with its -ano ending, probably refers to a Roman-era landowner. We love the many theories about the origin of the name. The best-loved is a legend: an image of the Virgin, stolen by pirates, is said to have spoken the words «posa, posa» ("put me down") during a sudden storm that prevented them from setting sail. Others link it to Poseidon. We recommend discovering the village on foot, starting from Piazza Flavio Gioia.
