Church of St Catherine of Alexandria in Praiano

Small seaside church of Amalfitan origin, linked to trade with Alexandria in Egypt, with an 1806 canvas of the saint's martyrdom.

Along the main road, with its right side overlooking the sea and a few steps from the old Torre a Mare, stands the church of St Catherine of Alexandria. It was built by local people who, trading with Alexandria in Egypt, brought the cult of the saint to the West as early as the time of the Republic of Amalfi.Restored at the end of the 16th century and again after 1776, when it risked being closed, it was embellished with stucco. On the altar we recommend looking at the 1806 canvas of the martyrdom of St Catherine by the Calabrian painter Angelo Mozzillo. In the 1960s a polychrome marble altar arrived from the basilica of the Crocifisso in Amalfi.
