A museum of sacred art in central Caserta, with around 200 works from the 14th to the 19th century from the churches of the diocese.

In the centre of Caserta, near the cathedral and the Royal Palace, the Diocesan Museum opened in 2011 in the former chapels of the Most Holy Sacrament and of the Rosary, linked to the Church of the Redeemer demolished in 1925. It holds around 200 works, including paintings, sculptures, vestments, reliquaries and ex-votos, rescued from churches of the diocese that were destroyed, closed or at risk, especially after the 1980 earthquake. We love the panel of Saint Catherine of Alexandria by Pompeo Landulfo, alongside the 17th-century Saint Michael the Archangel and the wooden sculptures of the Redeemer and the Madonna and Child. In Casertavecchia, in Piazza Vescovado, stone finds are on display, including fragments of 12th-century ambos from the cathedral. The museum opens only occasionally and hosts contemporary art exhibitions: we recommend checking beforehand.
