The Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Santa Maria Capua Vetere, founded in 432 by St Symmachus, combines ancient marble and Baroque decoration.

Founded in 432 by Bishop St Symmachus and dedicated to Our Lady after the Council of Ephesus, the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore is the main church of Santa Maria Capua Vetere and was long the cathedral of ancient Capua. We like recalling that here, in 787, peace was sealed between Arechis II and Charlemagne.Inside, columns and marble reused from the ancient city sit alongside rich 17th- and 18th-century Baroque decoration. We suggest looking for the Assumption of the Virgin painted by Giacinto Diano in 1770 and the wooden statue of the Assunta by Antonio Migliorini. In August the basilica is at the centre of the city's most heartfelt celebrations.
