16th-century church in Formicola commissioned by Roberta Carafa, with a huge 18th-century canvas dedicated to St William.
In the centre of Formicola, next to the old abbey of the Verginiani that now houses the town hall, stands the Church of the Spirito Santo. It was built in 1571 at the wish of the noblewoman Roberta Carafa, Baroness of Formicola, and enlarged in 1760 by the Verginian abbot Pascasio Anecio, who enriched it with decoration.Above all we are struck by the large canvas of about 111 square metres depicting St William receiving the rule from St Benedict, painted in 1765 by Gerolamo Starace and Antonio Vecchione. We recommend visiting it together with the former complex of the Verginiani, to read the village's monastic history.
