Church · Liberi (CE)

Church of Santa Barbara in Liberi

  • Visit: about 20 min
  • 458 m

Stone church in the Cese hamlet of Liberi, with a 15th-century core enlarged in the 18th century and a bell tower beside the façade.

In the small hamlet of Cese, in Liberi, we find the Church of Santa Barbara, the community's only surviving religious building. Its original core most probably dates from the second half of the 15th century, while the enlargement and completion work belongs to the end of the 18th century. It is reached by climbing an external staircase, which gives it an intimate and theatrical look.Built entirely of stone, it has a single nave with a lunetted barrel vault, a chapel on each long side and the altar at the end. We like the bell tower rising to the right of the façade, integrated into the building, and the stucco band with geometric motifs running along the walls. We recommend combining the visit with a walk in the greenery at the foot of Monte Melito.
