Fortified Benedictine hermitage from around 1000 on Monte Maggiore, at Rocchetta e Croce, linked to the stay of St Anselm of Aosta.

At about 857 metres on Monte Maggiore, in the Trebulani mountains, stands the Hermitage of San Salvatore, also known as the abbey of San Salvatore del monte Caprario. It was built around the year 1000 by Benedictine monks as a fortified monastery, protected on three sides by sheer drops. According to tradition, in 1098 St Anselm of Aosta stayed here and wrote part of his Cur Deus homo.Restored in the 1970s and 1980s, it has three levels: the crypt, the church and a living floor. We like the 15th-century portal in grey tuff and the single-nave interior with cross vaults on slender pillars, the statue of the Saviour on the high altar and the abbot's seat in the apse. We suggest climbing up here for the silence and the panorama, as pilgrims once did.
