Church of the Santissimo Salvatore in Caggiano

The mother church of the Santissimo Salvatore is Caggiano's oldest monument: its origins go back to the 11th and 12th centuries and the façade still bears a Romanesque imprint. In the 15th century it played a special role, effectively hosting the bishops of the diocese of Satriano and functioning as a true cathedral.Inside, with a single nave and a frescoed vault, we suggest looking at the 17th-century high altar with its gilded wooden throne, the many altars once sponsored by local families and the pulpit carved by Fortunato Cafaro. The reinforced-concrete bell tower, on the other hand, is an early 20th-century addition.
