Medieval castle of Alvignano with four towers and a keep, overlooking the middle Volturno valley; abandoned in the 15th century after an earthquake.

Alvignano Castle occupies a strategic position from which it dominates the whole middle Volturno valley. Its plan is defended by four corner towers, the largest of which serves as the keep, and the thickness of the walls clearly reveals its nature as a fortress.Inside you can still make out the kitchens, storerooms, cisterns and an old chapel called Santa Maria al Castello. The castle was finally abandoned in the 15th century, after an earthquake rendered it unusable. We like the somewhat melancholy charm of these ruins: we recommend going up to enjoy the view over the valley.
