Church of Sant'Angelo a Piesco

  • Visit: about 20 min

Ruins of a rural chapel of Lombard origin on a height above the river Calore, on the outskirts of Benevento.

At the top of a 208-metre height, on the right bank of the river Calore on the outskirts of Benevento, lie the remains of the church of Sant'Angelo a Piesco. It is a rural chapel founded in the Lombard period, explicitly mentioned in 1102. At the end of the 16th century the archiepiscopal seminary bought the fief and Archbishop Palombara restored the little church. We do not know when it was abandoned, but the structure can still be read: a rectangular hall covered by a barrel vault, with a splayed lancet window at the end and three windows on the right-hand side, while the façade has collapsed. It has been protected by the Ministry since 1989. We recommend this destination to anyone who loves isolated places and views over the Calore valley.
