An early medieval church on Via Stefano Borgia, with three naves divided by Roman granite columns and restoration that reveals its layers.

On Via Stefano Borgia in Benevento stands the church of the Santissimo Salvatore, of early medieval origin as documents and excavations attest. Struck by earthquakes several times, it was devastated in 1688 and reconsecrated in 1696 by Cardinal Orsini, the future Pope Benedict XIII. In 1884, after new works, it received the bell tower and organ that we can still see today. We really like its three-nave interior, separated by a double row of ancient Roman columns in grey granite. Closed after the 1962 earthquake, it returned to worship in 2001 after conservative restoration that left visible the traces of its transformations over the centuries, like a true stratigraphy. We suggest reading it slowly, observing the different layers of its long history.
