Village · Benevento (BN)

The ancient heart of Benevento, a city born at the confluence of the Calore and Sabato that grew under Rome along the Appian Way and the Via Traiana.
Walking through the historic centre of Benevento means crossing millennia. Myth says the city was founded by Diomedes after the fall of Troy; more concretely, the first settlement arose in the plain where the Calore and Sabato rivers meet, a land later inhabited by the Samnites and the Caudini. After the defeat of Pyrrhus in 275 BC the city entered Rome's orbit and its name changed from Maleventum to Beneventum. The extension of the Appian Way and the new Via Traiana towards Apulia made it a crucial hub, with strong growth in the Augustan age, before its decline and destruction at the hands of Totila.
