Church of San Michele in Tufo

  • Visit: about 20 min
  • 250 m

A natural cave turned into a place of worship, with an altar, frescoes and a spring: the heart of Tufo's devotion.

Tufo's most evocative place is the cave of Saint Michael the Archangel, a natural cavity adapted for worship and now reachable from the village. Inside we find an altar with the statue of the saint and several frescoes of historical and artistic interest, in a space that stretches for dozens of metres underground. We are fascinated by the small side cave with a spring, whose water was once believed to be miraculous. Saint Michael is the village's patron saint, and his feast on 8 May brings a procession through the streets of the historic centre: we suggest coming on those days to experience the local devotion, linked to the Michaelic routes that cross Irpinia.
