An early Christian basilica in Prata di Principato Ultra with a catacomb and the remains of an 8th-century chapel, among the oldest sites in Irpinia.
In Prata di Principato Ultra, in the middle Sabato valley, one of Irpinia's oldest monuments awaits us: the early Christian basilica of Maria Santissima dell'Annunziata. It fascinates us above all for what it preserves, namely the remains of a catacomb and a small 8th-century church, rare evidence of the first Christian centuries in this area.The site suffered in the 1980 earthquake, when the detachment of the rock face above damaged the structure. Devotion to the Annunziata remains alive, however: the two Sundays after Easter are dedicated to her feast. We suggest visiting at a leisurely pace, letting yourself be guided by the sense of antiquity that you breathe among its stones.
