Church of San Marcellino

  • Visit: about 20 min

Church of the patron saint of San Marcellino, founded in 1125 and renovated several times, with a Neoclassical façade and painted vaults.

The Church of San Marcellino, dedicated to the martyred priest who is the town's patron, was built in 1125 on the site of an older chapel. Remodelled in the 16th and 18th centuries, in 1875 and in 1954, it now has a single nave and a Neoclassical façade marked by four pilasters and crowned by a pediment. We like the vaults frescoed by the Neapolitan painter Carmine Adamo with scenes from the saint's life, and the 19th-century entrance staircase in Vesuvian pietra arsa lava stone. We suggest also visiting the side chapel, turned into a small museum space for ex-votos.
