Caiazzo Cathedral

  • Visit: about 20 min
  • 209 m

The co-cathedral of Caiazzo, a minor basilica since 2013, with a three-aisled interior and a majolica-clad dome over the transept.

Caiazzo's main place of worship is the co-cathedral of Maria Santissima Assunta and Santo Stefano Vescovo, which some scholars believe stands on the remains of an ancient pagan temple. Transformed from the 10th century, when Caiazzo became a diocese, and then in the Norman period, it was a cathedral until 1986, when the diocese of Alife-Caiazzo was created. In 2013 it was raised to the rank of minor basilica. We recommend looking at the façade marked by pilasters and topped by a broken pediment with the bishop's coat of arms, then entering the Latin-cross interior with a nave and two aisles. We particularly like the dome over the transept, with its majolica-clad lantern, which stands out on the skyline of the old town.
