On the Monteoliveto hill, the church of San Gabriele holds over a thousand years of monastic history overlooking Airola.

We climb the Monteoliveto hill, where a first church was built in 960 and consecrated a few years later by the Archbishop of Benevento. In 1033 a small monastery of Cluniac Benedictines settled here; later came the Olivetans, then the Benedictines of Montevergine and, from 1882, the Passionist Fathers, who still run the complex today. The present building is the third to stand on this spot: it has an elliptical plan with a single nave, four side altars and a fine high altar. We are intrigued by the red porphyry column holding a relic of Saint Bartholomew. The façade and bell tower, in large blocks of tuff and stone, face Airola: we suggest enjoying the view over the valley before heading back down.
