On the Monteoliveto hill, the ruins of Airola Castle, probably Norman, preserve a fine doorway with a coat of arms.

Airola Castle crowns the Monteoliveto hill, reached from the centre by two roads. Probably built in the Norman period, it belonged to Rainulf of Alife, and in 1277 it hosted for three days Charles I of Anjou, who the year before had granted the fief to the de Cortillon brothers. Today its ruins survive, enclosed by two concentric rings of walls. The most evocative part is the north-east entrance, which has come down almost intact: a white stone doorway with a depressed arch, bearing the coat of arms and the mechanism that closed the drawbridge. Inside you can make out round and cross-shaped loopholes and, to the right of the courtyard, a palatine chapel. We like climbing up here for the view over the Caudina valley. We recommend comfortable shoes.
