Church of the Madonna della Neve in Airola

Church with an old monastery on Monte Tairano, above Airola, long home to the Crutched Friars and now under restoration.

We climb up Monte Tairano, where the church of the Madonna della Neve (Our Lady of the Snow) was built together with a monastery. For a long time the Crutched Friars (Crociferi) lived here, but in the end they left: the place, isolated as it was, proved too dangerous to stay. The building is fairly large and inside has five altars, along with some frescoes. The church has been undergoing restoration for years, so we recommend checking before your visit: even from the outside, though, the mountain setting rewards the climb.
