Monte Castello is the hill of about 420 metres that towers over Castel Morrone and offers a 360-degree view over the Matese, the Volturno valley and, on clear days, as far as the Gulf of Naples. The name does not refer to a medieval castle but to an ancient pre-Roman and Roman castellum, while stretches of polygonal walls and some medieval ruins survive in the area.On the summit stands the sanctuary of Maria Santissima della Misericordia, the village's patron saint, heir to a small church already mentioned in 1113. Here on 1 October 1860 Garibaldi's men led by Pilade Bronzetti held out against the Bourbon troops, and Bronzetti fell in combat. We recommend climbing up at sunset to enjoy the view and the memory of the place.
