Church of Santa Maria del Soccorso in Caiazzo

Along the road that descends from Caiazzo's castle hill towards Cesarano we come across this small church, known as early as the 9th century under the title of Sant'Angelo in Auxilio and attended by the families of the nearby houses. On the façade a Renaissance portal dated 1497 coexists with Baroque-style decoration, with busts of St Vitus, St Donatus and a Madonna and Child among flying angels.Inside we find a single hall with a basilica layout. In the 18th century the building was enlarged with new rooms, and the dome, bell tower, altar and marble balustrade were rebuilt. We recommend looking on the left for a marble plaque with family coats of arms and a Latin inscription, a moving dedication by a husband to his wife and daughter who died too young.
