Next to the cemetery of Piana di Monte Verna stands the Church of Santa Maria a Marciano, whose name is thought to derive from a Roman villa of the Marciano family: in 1882 the remains of a bath building came to light. Already mentioned in 979, the church owes its present appearance to a Gothic rebuilding in the first half of the 14th century.We like the two-level façade with its pediment, the square bell tower and the hermitage above the church with its 14th-century spiral staircase. Inside, we recommend admiring the frescoes restored in 2017, including a St Luke of 1334 and an enthroned Madonna, and looking for the reused Roman pieces, such as a milestone and an inscribed column.
